Paul I think you may have lost sight of the big picture. There are usually several things to attempt before dumping any ditcheable weight, which is the very, repeat very, last option. At that time, the cost of any item of equipment is insignificant and would not be consideration. The point about a canister being ditcheable is that it avoids the clutter of a weight belt and the inherent unreliability of a weight belt. If you take a weight belt it will be clutter and risk on very dive you do. Whereas, you should never need to dump a canister. If you don't have ditcheable weight, fine, I don't care, I don't want to argue about that. However, if you feel that you need to have ditcheable weight, then making it the single most expensive piece of equipment you own is not a great idea. The time when you need to ditch is not the time to pussyfoot around because you think you might be able to make it. I think you'll do a lot more of that, if your ditcheable weight is an $800 HID light, then if it's a $20 weight belt. Anyway, that's just how I feel about it, I know that it's DIR to do it this way, and saying anything against DIR is likely to get you roasted to a crisp, but this has been bothering me for some time now, so I thought it was worth mentioning.
