This was written for the another mailing list but I'm reposting it on this one because I would like to hear the oppinions of other divers not just the ones on the nautical archeologe mailing list. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ I don't know how many of you get this paper but in vol 11, #11 has an article by David Finnern. I'm interested in any responce members from this list have to this article. I found it very interesting and as in all wrecks are in a state of deterioration. The vast majority of these ships hold little interest to the pro. archeologeists. But, a vast number of amateur archeologeists and just plain divers want to dive just about any wreck they can. I want to know why if the there is no real interest form the archeologists community there are so many laws that are suppost to protect the wrecks for them. They don't seem to be putting any, effort into preserving them and with out preservation they will by reclaimed by the ocean's and will by lost to us forever. I support the recovery of historicle records and information from the wrecks by trained archeologist. But what of all the wrecks that have no real value to historians and archeologist. The ones that will never get researched by the socalled professionals because there is more inportant things to dig up or just no money to do the job. I know the amateurs don't keep good records and don't map the sites properly, but most simply don't know how. Instead of spending time and money to "protect" these wrecks, which in all probability will never be looked at by a trained person, why can't those who have the training give the wreck divers the proper training. I'm sure most divers would like to have the training and use it on the wrecks they dive. Their records and maps may not be as good as the one done by a full scale project, but they will be much better then NONE at all. And that is what we will have if the trend in so called protection laws and other acts being put up by the states and organizations in the U.S and around the world continues. As I said before, your oppinion of the article and any oppinion you have of my statments would by greatly appreciated. If David Finnern is out there on the net I would Like to hear from him. And If its posible have him post the article. Henry S Batchelor Jr. At henryb@wa*.co* Im a wreck diver and a commercial diver. I hope to go into the field of nautical archeologe in the future. If I can find the money to get to proper degrees If anybody has a dive job for a good commercal diver with ROV,HeO2, and chamber experiene send e-mail. P.S. Thanks for takeing the time to read this posting.
