Used a spool the other week on a dive where the primary jamed (not an EE :-(
I deploy just before my first gas switch, which was 21m (50%) in this case.
I ended up completing the gas switch, then took out my spool & backup bouy.

As I was well practiced in deploying via the exhaust gas method, there was no
different skill
required in backup deployment. Very tempted to use the spool as primary
deployment method, as it was a cinch.

Don't use Pisidons - so not a risk for me.

There is no loose line - Have the reel in my left hand and grip one edge of the
buoy with my thumb against the reel
The other hand pulls open the other edge of the buoy. This is done about 6"
above my head. Turn head upto the left
and exhale - you can see the buoy fill with your left eye. Repeat exhale then
bring hands forward and release buoy.
run thumb lightly on the rim of the reel to prevent over-run & provide smooth
deployment.
