I just got through reading the TDI books for adv. nitorx, stage deco, trimix and extended range. In the advanced nitrox book, the idea is presented that using nitrox a diver may think he is thinking clearly, even though he is really not. The book never addresses why, but most likely this is due to oxygen being narcotic at higher partial pressures. What bugs me about the book is that they say that this false impression is a good thing. If you ask me, it's bloody dangerous, and only an idiot would think that it's good to be at 150fsw, think you're doing great, but in fact be mentally impaired. What really pisses me off is that in order to get a trimix fill around these parts, and in order to get instruction on some other aspects, you need to go through this BS first. The book goes on to make a big deal about how you figure out what the max depth is where you feel comfortable with your narcosis, and then adjust your nitrox mix to that equivalent depth. Like I said in a previous post, I don't agree with how the DIR info is presented (and believe me, I'm not in the minority in this opinion), but this kind of training is pretty stupid too. I spotted some other stuff as well (8 D-Rings anyone?). Advanced strokification indeed!
