Just got back from the spectacle. They raised it with minimum trouble, a strap had to be reinforced. Once up, they took some extra time to weld the truss to the barge / holding container for some extra support. They arrived in the harbor around 12:00 or so with hundreds of boats surrounding it and the crew all on the barge. I was on the deck of the Yorktown for it- if you see the NBC news, I was about 3 feet from them on the rail. Due to the holding container, not much of the Hunley was visible at all. If it gives you any idea, I won't know what I was looking at until I scan and enlarge the photos. On the Yorktown, they had some Civil War (sorry, War of Northern Aggression) recreation people performing salutes with the three cannons and numerous rifles. I never want to be 10 yards from a Civil War cannon when it fires again. Amazingly, it was not very crowded and I made it in and out of Charleston with minimal traffic. If anybody is interested in seeing the photos, let me know and I'll post them when I have them scanned. Should be really cool if they can raise it and restore it.... Unlike the monitor fiasco but we won't go into that one....
