>Please excuse my ignorance...
=20
If you can handle mine, I can handle yours.

>Is it really bad for someone like Tony Maffatone to work with new ideas =
and try them out?
=20
The only "new" idea was to put all the tanks on his back horizontally.
=20
>Granted, he may have made a terrible mistake but isn't that how big =
discoveries are made?
=20
All he did was re-prove that gas blocking valves are a shitty idea. =
There was nothing new to be discovered in this rig.
=20
>I kinda thought that was part of the adventure to all of this.
=20
That rig was the equivalent of a doctor coming up with a new needle for =
bloodletting.
=20
Tony was trying to polish a turd and the turd luster limit was reached =
years ago.
=20
>Did the first rebreather work perfectly the first time?
=20
Of course not. The next rebreather took lessons from the first. A =
bigger, more complex version of the same rig was not the answer then and =
it isn't now.
=20
>I am not condoning stupidity and since I don't know exactly what Tony =
was doing it may very well have been stupid.
=20
Even with my very limited experience I could see big problems.
=20
Getting a diver to _reliably_ alternate between independent tanks with =
the same mix is hard enough.
=20
How much could be expected from that gagger of a manifold he had to =
operate?

>I am just suggesting that maybe he has some good ideas and if this is =
what he enjoyed doing then good for him.
=20
Perhaps, but the shitty ideas killed the good ones along with him.
=20
>I am sorry for him but at least he got to die doing something he very =
much enjoyed. How many of us get to say that?

I don't know. Perhaps Tony enjoyed tinkering more than diving. I just =
wish he had checked on the failures of similar setups first.

Every time I see one of these events my appreciation of a divemaster and =
boat captain who aren't afraid to scream at me increases.
