I think George would have tried to paint "Whistler's Mother" in miniature with a can of Rustoleum Spray paint- he's never been known to be subtle or delicate when hyperbole and diatribe are available. Nevertheless, being a Noo Jorzy diver, I have to say that, as usual, he is both right and wrong. In the past year, I have seen training by literally half a dozen shops, from four different agencies, and probably close to a dozen instructors in action. I have seen advanced OW certification dives take place in 20 feet in a sheltered quarry and basic OW dives in surging surf with less than 5 foot visibility with a downpour going on at the surface. I have been hit on the head by an instructor who dropped from the surface, ignored my bubbles and only noticed my presence after she had knocked my reg out of my mouth with her AL 80. I have also seen training that still can be best described as "open water boot camp" run by a woman who not only demands the highest standards from her students, but also hand picks and trains instructors who do the same. These students, when the go on their first boat dive are ready for the swells, currents, cold, and poor vis that characterize our area. I have dived on boats where you don't get into the water DIW, and on boats where no one understands DIR. So, given the concentration of divers and operations in this area, to try any kind of generalization is the worst form of BS. BTW, I'm going to the San Diego with Wahoo in the morning.
