Hey Dave! You know what, I think the first mistake people make is
trying to take a hostile activity like functioning UNDER WATER for
longer than you can hold your breath; then divide it into
beginner/advanced/professional/technical/cave/night/blah blah blah!

The fact that commercial agencies like PADI, IANTD, TDI/SDI think in a
linear fashion is ridiculous! Think about it like this. In order to get
your drivers license, you first go to the DMV. They make you purchase
the most expensive vehicle you can afford. Then, the instructor tells
you that he is going to teach you to start the car, use the gas pedal,
use the blinkers, brakes and trunk lid. BUT, He will not teach you to
steer until you get your ADVANCED license!. Oh yeah, I will not teach
you to drive on 4 lane roads until you get your Lane-Mix license.
Parallel Parking? Forget it! That's only for those crazy PP Drivers! No
one in their right mind would do that kind of driving. Seat Belts? Don't
need them, not with a car like that!

Diving does not have a linear progression to learning. There is not a
formal start and stop to the process. Therefore I do not think the
continued sub-categories of diving should be condoned.

Diving is a potentially fatal activity. Like all activities of this
nature; you should learn as much as possible and not constrain yourself
to a specific category.

Whaddya think?

Subject: Define Tech Diving

I've been lurking for some time now, and occasionally get great info
from
this list and Quest and the GUE web site. there are obviousley some very
experienced divers who are willing to share info. Theres also some very
inexperienced divers trying to imitate Trey and a few others! But look,
out
of the 3000 odd posts in my inbox 90% of them are just people slaging
each
other off!

Now this is the Techdiver list -- yes!

Would it be an good idea to define what tech diving is?

Actually define where, in the opinion of the most experienced, the cut
off
between recreational diving and tech diving lays?

I'm not talking DIR here, after all we all know that DIR can apply for
all
types of diving

What do you think Trey? it would save you loads of time not having to
respond to none tech diving issues

Ps
By the way, we should keep Dr Black on the list, the antics between him
and
several others on the list keep me laughing all night and are possibly
some
of the most talked about posts. This helps keep DIR being talked about
:-)

PPs
Anyone know of a good GUE instructor in the UK?

David
