I can tell you what not to use on ally tanks - any enamel that 
requires baking.  The baking temperatures are sufficient to cause a 
crystallographic change in the alumin{i}um, with detrimental results. 
One of our local heros decided to paint his tanks in the exact shade 
that his boat (and, yes, Land Rover tow vehicle) were painted; hence 
the use of car enamel and subsequent baking.  During the first 
filling of the shiny new tanks, a loud bang was heard...
