Now you've got me. I think aluminum is typically anodized, a process different than painting, which may be the source of the original problem. A painted Al tank may be a bad thing. A steel tank, however, does well around Zinc. Zinc gives up it's first electron more easily than steel, and so as long as there is zinc in electrical contact with steel (or many other metals), the zinc will corrode before the other metal. This is why they put (and replace) zincs on outboard motors, and also why you sometimes see a nut or bolt badly rusted, surrounded by clean metal. It's called a sacrificial anode, and so zinc primer is a good idea on a steel tank. Conspiracy theorists often wonder why they don't put zincs on car body parts. Actually, conspiracy theorists KNOW why they don't put zincs on car body parts, but that's for another group. #----------------------------------------------------# Roger Carlson H 310-376-4437 Somewhere off Hermosa Beach, CA W 310-813-0858 Roger_Carlson@at*.sp*.tr*.co* F 310-812-1363 New and improved: http://darkside.sp.trw.com:21 #----------------------------------------------------#
