MEMORANDUM TO UW-PHOTO LISTSERV MEMBERS

This is a bit off-subject, but underwater photographers can and do
play an important part in efforts to save/protect our oceans and
marine life.

Mark Strickland, Photo Pro on the M/V Fantasea liveaboard, Phuket,
Thailand, reported to the ASMP-Underwater ListServ that an eMail
campaign was waged by Singapore-based underwater photographer Tony
Wu and others which, at least in part, resulted in Thai Airways
discontinuing serving Shark Fin Soup to passengers.

Thai Airways' consumption of Shark Fins was not likely large, but the
effect of their actions on public opinion will make a positive
contribution to stopping the practice of shark finning.

You can contribute to this effort by doing a couple of things:

(1) Send a message to Thai Airways supporting their decision (get the
name and address from a message to me below), then

(2) Perhaps find another airline that is serving shark fin soup and
take the lead in a campaign to stop it. One or two people doing the
research, then asking others to support him/her via the Internet, can
have SIGNIFICANT results.

This communication is going only to the UW-PHOTO ListServ. If you are
a member of other lists, feel free to use this material to enlist the
aid of others. Please use the material in it's entirety to avoid it
becoming an appeal without verified facts and specific contacts being
included.

Thanks.

Chris
