No, you do not have to buy an official bottom timer.    In some cases this may
not be practical.    For example, the TCDP runs the Vyper in gauge mode.   Some
of the old boys have bottom timers that go deep, but the new ones do not.
Uwatec's currently go to 330' and the Vypers go to 490'.
