JT, What was your dive/deco profile that produced the slobitus? Don -----Original Message----- From: Capt JT [mailto:captjt@mi*.co*] Sent: Monday, June 12, 2000 7:59 AM To: techdiver@aquanaut.com Cc: vbtech@ci*.co* Subject: Attack of the "Slobitus" Well it is plain now that I'm not immune to having problems. I will tell anything that happens on our trips, unlike some divers that wait several years to disclose problems so they can change what really happen or say " that was before I knew better". This past weekends dives to the U-140 depth 270ft and then the U-117 depth 235ft after a 4 hr SI on Saturday, and Ostfrisland depth 380ft on Sunday produced some interesting things. These wrecks range from 61 miles to 72 miles ENE from Rudee Inlet Va Beach, Va USA As Cobb has already posted the dacor scooter will not survive the depth of 270ft, I had modified mine by foaming in all the air spaces to give it more strength to endure the pressure of a 400ft dive.I had planned to take mine on my Ostfrisland dive, but after the U-140ft I chose not to.At 265ft I was able to control the sticking trigger but I could feel that scooter was in a great amount of stress and was "flexing" as I scootered down the U-140 which is 311 ft long.Mine did survive the dive. The attack of Slobitus occurred after the Ostfrisland dive were I reached a max depth 375ft. For those that do not know what Slobitus is that is the nickname I think George has given it. It in my opinion it is a form of "Skin Bends", we also had a representative from "Dan" (Divers Alert Network) on board and our dives were being studied by them. Charley Coffey ( from Dan) was very interested in this and took photos as well as monitored my condition. I did not go on 02, but instead took a pill equal to 3 or 4 Aleve to also help relieve the pain in my shoulders and legs that I also get when this happens. Just as I predicted the pain was gone in less than 1 hr and the "Slobitus" in less than 2 hrs. This was not my first time. The rash always shows on the fatty tissue on my abdomen. Thus it is nicknamed "Slobitus". The divers who went on this trip were Rick Atkins, Jeff Hewlett, Dave Widen, Jim Cobb, Brad Beskins, Bill Ripley, Rodney King, Gary Sanderson, Eric Deister, JT Barker Capt Charlie Capt/mate Mike Mate Becky Mate Chris Dan Rep. Charley Other things learned on the trip: 1) How to lose a stage off your gear line ask Bill 2) How to share air at 330ft ask Jeff 3) How to troll using your gear line ask Cobb 4) You can tell the water temp by the length of your "pecker" after the dive, if a female the high beams come on ask us ALL 5) Beware of a fishing boat that says you ran over their lines if I'm on board with a hand held VHF ;-) ask Capt Charlie Several photos will be on my site in a few days, maybe even a quick time movie of the U-117.
