I also had headaches early in my cave diving, but the answer was pretty simple, I was using Sherwood regs when I first started in 1990 that were several years old at that time--and they weren't even top of the Sherwood line. You might be having CO2 headaches, especially considering that it happens most during exertion. When I switched to Poseidons the headaches all but disappeared. Now I use Poseidon and Beuchat 1sts and Beuchat 2nds and use my Sherwoods for and pool use. Make sure your regs are tuned and that you are tuned. If you're out of shape and exerting through a reg you'll probably get headaches regardless of what you do. Buy good equipment and get in shape or wait until you do/are. I agree that drugs are not the answer, not even ibuprofen. The ibuprofen could mask other symptoms that might be essential to diagnose DCS.
