Jim, Like most stories you hear secondhand, there is a grain of truth to this, but that's about it. The accident happened to a local (SD) instructor, who is a friend of mine. He was teaching, and had several dives to do that day, so he figured he would breathe some high-PO2 nitrox (80/20, commonly referred to as "Strokemix") to help off-gassing between dives. When he turned the tank valve on, the reg "flashed", and began spewing fire. He quickly turned the valve off, and was burned over 10-12% of his body, mostly second-degree, with some third-degree in a couple of spots. He is currently in the Burn Center of a local hospital. I believe he will be fine, after a period of recovery The reg was an Atomic T1, which was pretty well tweaked. The tank is an AL 40, which is intact, but scorched. It didn't blow up. One of the shops has stopped pumping EAN, at least temporarily. I'm not certain if this is a permanent move, but I certainly hope not. That is about all I know. When I find out more, I will post it, since I assume rumors will be rampant. It was on the news (so i am told), that a fireman was diving "nitrox" and b/4 he entered the water, his 1st stage regulator "caught fire" and burned him on his back( 3rd degree) and burned most of the rear portion of hs wet suit. Seems the reg he had was (as I am told) an ATOMIC TI. model. also, it seems that a shop or 2 (in the area) has QUIT pumping nitrox. this, (to the best of my knowledge) happened in lower ca, around s/d-la area. Is there any truth to this? jim -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
