Subject: George's regs - was Re: 2nd stages
It ( my backup Apeks ) is non-adjustable, but has a balance chamber. The
difference is that these do not crack as easily as an ( air balanced )
G250 , for instance, and of course you can tighten the orifice setting
to increase the cracking presure, and you can set the switch so that it
may burp, but not freeflow. Also your IP needs to be lowered to the
120-130 range .

Scuba Pro used to make the G200 , which was a non adjustable , non air
balanced second, but I do not know what happened to that one. Maybe JJ
can tell us what the next best is, like the 380 or whatever they have
now. I used to just put the g200 seat and poppet in the other regs to
get that effect, or block the air balance chamber on the Apeks, but that
is not necessary, and without the collars for the tube, the poppet may
blow the lever ears out and fail the reg off , so I no longer do that
one.

It makes an excellent backup reg ( the Apeks non adjustable ).

Another big factor is how you set it up: the necklace must be tight to
the neck so that the reg is not hanging out where water will be passing
over the mouthpiece ( and thus lowering the pressure and causing it to
operate), and so that you can use the necklace to force the reg into
your mouth by putting the necklace around your head if you feel bad or
if you are in a high flow situation.

The position of the primary is face away ( down ) so it tends not to
freeflow either, and there you use the adjustment knob to make it hard
to crack. The Apeks seat tolerates a lot more knob turning that the
Scuba Pro, so I use Apeks for both primary and backup. The Pro breathes
a lot better, but that is a "mute" point on gas.

I use Scuba Pro for deco gases as I am breathing them longer, and the
gas is more likely to be nitrogen /oxygen rather than helium so is
harder to breathe.

In general, what you want is a "low performance" backup reg and an
adjustable primary, and on stages it makes no difference, although the
lower performance regs tend to give you less trouble, and on deco gas
you want ease of breathing.

Ther is also a third Apeks second which may be not have the balance
chamber, and that must be the one Tod is talking about. I do not have
any of those.

I do have six of the US 4 first, about six of the swivel version, and 18
of the Apeks adjsutable seconds and seven of the non adjustables. I have
more MK20 G250's and a bunch of Poseiden Odin with Apeks seconds, and a
bunch of Oceanics and a bunch of Beuchats. I also have several US
Divers.

Guess what - they all are a pain in the ass, but I have no Apeks parts -
never needed any.
