The individual I was talking about that had the problem was using a G250
second stage that was de-tuned and was using a Gavin scooter. She intends
to replace it in the very near future.

I use an R380 instead. It's adjustable as well and easy to breath, even at
depth - I had an o-ring failure in my primary that forced me to switch to my
backup. Other than the shock cord pulling at both sides of my mouth, I
didn't notice any significant difference.

I dive MK20's and G250's for both sets of regs, I have never had any
problems with them free flowing. I live and dive in Quebec so yes I dive
cold water year round and yes I do use a scooter ( I dropped surface swims
right after I dropped PADI). I have found there are two keys to the proper
functioning of equipment, read the manual (the 250's have adjustments to
de-tune them) and find a good service technician (if the reg is set-up
properly its a non-issue). I will service my regs at least once a year and
even more frequently depending on how they feel. Do I care about the cost?
maybe you should ask what price I put on my own life, think about it.

Actually, it is very good advice. Case in point - Just
this weekend I was diving with someone that had a
balanced secondary on the backup around the neck. We
were playing with some scooters and I watched the
individual scooter off in a cloud of bubbles as the reg
started to freeflow. Mine is not balanced and I've
never had that problem.

A similar situation is also possible in higher current.
