Subject: Fish Totes (was Case for Mako Scooter

You want cheap and industructable, try a Fish Tote. These are plastic bins
used for lugging fish in the commercial fishing industry, sold by
marine/fishing supply houses. Stackable, about 30" x 18" and 12" high, with
(optional) snap-on plastic tops. They are serious, heavy duty, rugged
things, nothing like the bins you find at home depot or Kmart. No hinges,
latches or locks, and not air/watertight, but just about indestructable.
About $10 for the box and $12 for the case. The top snaps on with numerous
tabs all around the top so they are not lockable but extremely unlikely to
open by mistake or mistreatment. If you want to lock them you can use bike
locks, or we often just cable tie them shut for a little extra security.

Since they have integral handles on each end, it is much easier to carry
and stack right the way up than to try to carry them the wrong way, so they
tend to get treated fairly well by baggage handlers. Plus they are really
easy to spot and/or describe if they do get lost.

I'm been meaning to post here about them (or maybe I already did) here.
Great way to carry dive gear on trips and expeditions. Most airlines allow
up to 3 70lb checked bags, and loaded with mixed hard/soft stuff they hold
the 70lb max nicely. Three of these will carry a heck of a lot of gear -
we even take doubles with us down to Fl ocassionally (talk about carrying
coal to Newcastle!), by breaking them down, pulling the valve, and putting
one tank in each tote, then filling the rest of the space with lighter/
softer stuff. Another virtue is that they don't proclaim themselves to
contain dive gear - since some airlines have been charging a surcharge for
dive gear, if we're asked what's in them we just say sports and camping
gear.
