Subject: student expectations
Finally, Dr. Black's latest post helped me to understand George's
vehement responses to stupid ideas!
As I was thinking about the idea of letting one of my students- be they
medical students, interns, residents, or fellows- get away with a
medication error, it dawned on me... The reason why George and the
others get so pissy at times is the seriousness of their business.
I would never let one of my students pass if they got "most" of their
diagnosis or treatments right. When it comes to real, life and death
situations, 100% correct is the minimum standard! That is why poor
teaching practices and letting less than very knowledgeable students
pass is so wrong. Whether it is medicine, where other people die, or
technical diving, where at least one, if not several can die, perfection
is always required.
Granted, I don't offer to cut my medical students a new path for
defecation every time they don't know the right answer. But if you are
a senior fellow, if you don't get it right all the time, you don't get
out of my sight to blow your nose!
The same should go for diving.
Open water, look at the pretty fishes at 10 meters, kind of diving can
be alot more forgiving than 130 feet, 15 foot vis, 2 knot current Jersey
wreck diving. Real tech diving, be it 200+ foot Atlantic wrecks, or
deep penetration cave diving is a whole order of magnitude above that.
And therefor it is necessary that the instructor be that much more
exacting in his standards.
If you can't tell students that they can't cut it, get out of the biz.
