Bryon- It is a very strong recommendation of both IANTD and NAUI (the two agencies for which I teach blending classes) that the blender be certified to dive the mix being blended. God knows as a mix diver, there is no way on this planet or any other that I'd let someone who wasn't mix certified mix my gases for me. What is taught (what IS taught?) in an IANTD Advanced EANx class is a joke, and even when combined with the blending class, doesn't even come close to giving one the knowledge or understanding of the effects of a little too much or too little of one gas or another. Back when I was learning all this, I learned 10 times more from the IANTD Tech. EANx book about mixing than I did from the Blender book. I then learned 1000 times more by actually doing it under close supervision. One big advantage I had was 8000 or 9000 cf of "disposable" gas to just screw around with, and dump off if I messed it up....
