Hi Al, don't be so hard on quarries=2E Over here Dorothea Quarry in North Wales is= =20 a big, cold hole in the ground, riddled with tunnels and shafts, old =20 buildings and assorted bits of rubbish=2E But its two big draws are that it= =20 enjoys extremely sheltered and controlled conditions (in a very hostile =20 climate) plus it is deep=2E Very deep, 108m at some points, most of it is =20= =20 over 40m depth=2E Dorry does attract the rec crowd in a variety of shapes, configs, states =20 of fitness, knowledge and health, etc=2E But it also provides an excellent=20= =20 meeting ground for technical divers doing training dives -- and I don't =20 mean formal, instructor led stuff=2E Just people turning up, trying new =20 stuff or getting to grips with the old=2E Some DIR, some not, most not =20 caring one way or the other without any hostility or rivalry, just the =20 opposite=2E I guess that's its draw -- its a place to meet, talk, learn =20 with people you have never seen before=2E These are not people who dive in quarries, these are people who want a =20 controlled environment for some practice when a real world dive is out of =20= =20 the frame=2E For example, on a recent trip one Sunday there were divers =20 testing a new rebreather design, members of the UK Freediving team, Cave =20 Diving Group (CDG) divers, magazine writers doing deep regulator tests, =20 divers testing new deco software and a host of people who thought a =20 quarry dive was better than none at all due to whatever factors=2E People =20= =20 travel from all over the country to dive here because of its favourable =20 conditions=2E We are very lucky to have the place but it is the rec crowd who do not =20 realise this=2E The easy access to depth gives a few of them an easy =20 adventure and more than a few times Dorry's future has had a question =20 mark over stupid behaviour that has led to incidents=2E Access is free, =20 depending on whether or not you can get parked but the day will come when =20= =20 it has controls and the inevitable clip-board wielding attendants who =20 will want to say what we can or cannot do=2E Don't take your local quarry for granted or write it off too soon=2E You'll= =20 miss it when its gone! Where are you going to =20 go? What are you going to do when you get there? Way too many people are learning to dive in quarries and only diving in quarries, know nothing else but diving in quarries and have NEVER EVER been in the ocean=2E Why?? Because the local shop people feel emasculated when they get seasick on a boat, especially when the crew doesnt, and they are supposed to be instructor =20 dive gods=2E As a result they take all their people to the quarry and breed quarry =20 divers who leave the sport after two years or less, because they never experience =20 the wonder of the ocean=2E They have total control in the quarry, and as a result the =20 sloppy training kills fewer< notice I didnt say none> of the students and the students dont get to see how inept their instructors are=2E Usually=2E And this is a place where the worlds best wreck diving is one hour away =20 by car=2E Instead of driving to the boats they drive three hours to the local mud =20 swamp=2E Dont get me wrong, the quarry is fine for confined water training, but =20 you cannot learn to DIVE there, you can only learn how to operate scuba gear =20 underwater=2E THis was not mant as a personal attack on Daniel Smith, Dan, come up to Brooklyn and Ill pay for you and a buddy to come see a shipwreck=2E We need our local =20 DIR crowd to step up and dive in the Ocean, the local boats are dying off because of =20 this damn tourist mud puddle=2E Regards, Al Marvelli Daniel Smith wrote: > This goes out to all who say that DIR is not catching on=2E I did some =20= =20 diving > this weekend at a PA quarry that is commonly used for checkout dives =20 for almost > all the New Jersey Shops=2E It is really a fun place to checkout some of= =20 the CFs > that people are calling gear rigging=2E Well, I think I counted 15-20 =20 divers that > were DIR, or at least approaching DIR=2E Now last year, there were none=2E= =20 So > something is starting to click up here=2E I even saw one shop taking =20 pictures of > the gear configurations, probably for a newsletter or website=2E > > DIR is spreading=2E > > regards, > > dan > > -- > Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut=2Ecom'=2E > Send subscribe/unsubscribe requests to =20 `techdiver-request@aquanaut=2Ecom'=2E -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut=2Ecom'=2E Send subscribe/unsubscribe requests to `techdiver-request@aquanaut=2Ecom'=2E __________________________________________________________________________=20= =20 ____ This message has been checked for all known viruses by Star Internet =20 delivered through the MessageLabs Virus Control Centre=2E For further information =20 visit- http://www=2Estar=2Enet=2Euk/stats=2Easp Visit our web site at www=2Escott-wilson=2Ecom Privilege and Confidentiality Notice=2E This e-mail and any attachments to it are intended only for the party=20 to whom they are addressed=2E They may contain privileged and/or=20 confidential information=2E If you have received this transmission in=20 error, please notify the sender immediately and delete any digital=20 copies and destroy any paper copies=2E Thank you=2E Scott Wilson Scotland Ltd Registered in Scotland No=2E 48951,=20 Registered Office: 6 Park Circus, Glasgow, G3 6AX=2E UK=2E ______________________________________________________________________________ This message has been checked for all known viruses by Star Internet delivered through the MessageLabs Virus Control Centre.
