Kiddies, As my girlfriend & I sat watching Nat. Geographic Explorer last Sat. night (Sure, we have no lives...) the feature on Great Whites Sharks was punctuated by the little inane blurbs by the host, Boyd Matson, who was out on some boat somewhere in the tropics getting ready to jump in the water. Lo & behold, there he was, putting his first stage in his mouth -- attached to a 7 ft. hose! Okay, so it was a floaty yellow hose, attached to a S-pro D400, all mounted on a Transpac II, so I don't think I'd call old Boyd the poster boy for DIR, but at least it's a start... I guess he must've learned at least something when he took his little class at Ginnie a while back -- I think Pete Butt was his instructor (is he DIR? I don't know the guy). I think that elements of DIR are starting to show up in recreational diving, especially since George & Dan did the "DIR demo" in LA in Jan.. I'll bet that here on the West Coast, we'll see increasing numbers of DIR and "DIR-like" rigs as time goes on. Here in San Diego, some of the people we come into contact with are starting to notice how my girlfriend & I work as a buddy team, & how our gear is rigged. MHK & John Walker, is that what you're seeing in LA as well? I did some diving this weekend at a PA quarry that is commonly used for checkout dives for almost all the New Jersey Shops. It is really a fun place to checkout some of the CFs that people are calling gear rigging. Well, I think I counted 15-20 divers that were DIR, or at least approaching DIR. Now last year, there were none. So something is starting to click up here. I even saw one shop taking pictures of the gear configurations, probably for a newsletter or website. DIR is spreading. regards, dan -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
