In my experience, a lot of the positive trim aspects is due to the weight distributed along your back by the SS backplate. I tried an aluminum backplate in warm water with an AL80 once, and immediately noticed the difference in trim. I dive with an SS backplate in the Caribbean, but with a 5mm jumpsuit (I get cold very quickly) for recreational reef dives. I need to add about 4 pounds on a weight belt with that wetsuit. I put the weight belt on first, under the backplate. During practice drills I have had no trouble ditching the weights. I have not had to do it "for real" as yet. Even with the weights in place, I can swim up from depth with a full cylinder and empty BC without much trouble. -- Art Greenberg artg@ec*.ne* -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
