Now that I've experienced the DIR configuration (ie seen the light) I'm trying to decide between a SS or an aluminum backplate. For the time being my typical configuration will be with a single AL80. Many of my dives are trips to tropical waters where I usually wear a 3mm wetsuit w/ 6lbs of weight. For this use the AL plate seems ideal, to lighten my luggage. Plus I'd be concerned with being negative and not having any ditchable weight. For local diving I usually wear a 7mm farmer john + hooded vest and 18lbs weight. At some point I'd like to get a dry suit (may be sooner, rather than later) and work into doubles. I really liked the way the backplate & wing allowed me to stay horizontal. How much of this effect was due to the improved wing design vs taking 6 lbs off my hips by using the SS backplate? Thanks.
