Don, a couple of comments:

People do get along here. However, most people on this list have tremendous
passion, experience, and a deep love of the "sport". They are desperately
trying to prevent people from killing themselves through stupidity.
Sometimes people don't listen to good advice no matter how loud you shout.
Or, to use a flame metaphor, children don't know the meaning of the word
"hot" until they first burn themselves. By posting here, you're playing
with fire. Everyone gets burned once in a while, but you learn a lot.
Watch, participate, learn, and you will become a MUCH better diver than you
ever imagined you could be. Also, there is a tremendous amount of humor
sprikled amongst the flames, you just need to follow the posts for a while
and pick it out.

Having said that, let me give you a free lesson without flaming:

"I am nowhere near being a tech diver and will probably never dive trimix or
make a dive involving more than one short deco stop, and I have learned much
here. I expect to never be a "DIR" diver, but I can understand where it
comes from and if I was doing caves, deep wreck penetration or deco diving,
I would be much like these people."

DIR is not just for deep, cave, or wrecks, it's for everyone, all the time.
It's a complete system designed to provide safe diving under all conditions.
Anything else is sub optimal and can get you killed. What is your life
worth? I've recently changed over and because of it, I feel I'm a much
better diver and feel safer under all conditions. It's a system designed to
repair all the damage done to divers from bullshit theories and principles
learned from the mainstream agencies during your OW and other classes
designed for the lowest common denominator. I strongly recommend that you
reconsider that statement.

See? I've been nice since you're new to the list. Next time may be
different.

Kurt

Once in a while. In fact, much more often than it first appears.

  >I realize this is a list full of men and women that perform skills most
of >the diving world would never dream (i.e., have nightmares) about, but in

The passion here seems to center around techniques that have demonstrated
problems.

  >I know a few people on this list, after my first post several people I
know >remarked "I see you found the tech list" and I have been informed that

It runs in cycles. If someone was advocating something that had killed
someone you knew and nearly killed you, how passionate would you be?

  >They also tell me, if I stick around and can wade through the fighting I
>will learn a lot, so I intend to stick around for a while. As well
  >I hope to soon find time to read through some archives, you can never
>learn too much.

I am nowhere near being a tech diver and will probably never dive trimix
or make a dive involving more than one short deco stop, and I have learned
much here. I expect to never be a "DIR" diver, but I can understand where
it comes from and if I was doing caves, deep wreck penetration or deco
diving, I would be much like these people.

When quick access to the surface is cut off for any reason much of
personal preference needs to fall by the wayside.

  >To sum up I wish to quote a poor, bruised, taxi
  >driver, "can't we all just get along?"

I think we can, but I don't put myself deep in caves underwater or up
against a major deco ceiling. There are people here who can't say that.
