Bonne Terre is an OK dive. (There's nothing else within 200 miles). Here's the scoop: Water temp is about 55 degrees. You have to lug your gear a long way under ground (and then back up). They provide you with cylinders (alum 80's with yoke). No lights, no knives. (They don't want divers swimming off on their own and hurting themselves. It's bad for business. They also don't want people collecting souvenirs. You must stay with the group. Beware: strokes abound. It's diving for the lowest common denominator. You must take the trails in order, (1, 2, 3, etc) unless you have been there before and have a stamp in your log book. Dives are expensive ($85/DIVE! a year ago) They start you off with a nice little video. First dive they take everyone to 25', have them kneel on the bottom, and flood and clear your mask. After that, you head off with a group of at least 8 (I don't remember what the max group size is.) Dives last about 45 minutes. Long surface intervals. I did three dives ($255). Was it worth it? Only because they were running late and had an advanced class that was doing a night dive. Halfway through our last dive they shutdown all the lights. That was cool, but otherwise Bonne Terre is just like any other mine pit. There's not really a lot to see but rock formations and some old tools. For those familiar with Midwest diving, Bonne Terre is very similar to the Crosby mine pits in northern Minnesota. However, vis is great and it's a chance to blow bubbles. If you're into it, you can get a real great cheesy shot of you standing in an ore cart underwater. Would I go do it again? Only if I was really jonesing for a dive. Once is enough. You be the judge. List, We're leaving Tuesday morning for a drive across country (Bos - Alb - Seattle). Is Diving the Bonne Terre Mine in Missouri worth lugging the gear across country (in our small car) or is it pretty dull? -ben __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
