I havenbeen diving last couple years , still lurk hear . You are right about the 99.00 cources , they are to suck you in. They make money on the gear. Not the gear that you need , but the gear that they want to sell you. so fist off they hose you on expensive gear before you know what kind of diving you want to do. So if you go the OW rout , they stick you with a wet suit , stab bc and alluminum thanks. Now if you actualy dive the NE you and start to get into the wreck crowd , it all starts over agien, but now with more expensive gear. Doubles , chaterbars or what ever happens to be in style. Just look at the RANGE o dive gear setups there are hear. Every shpop and dive monkey wants to sell you some mor stuff thats not what you need. ie look at the whole o2 cleaning buissiness , and dive monlkeys that dont turn the valve all the wat off. Next morning the tanks are empty. Ot the DM who insist you spend 65.00 every year to O2 clean and degrease you tanks for nitroc and O2 for your deco ect... They6 make there mony on what they sell you. I still have three us divers regs in the closet , Took me four weeks to find some one who would convert one of them to o2 , ended up shipping it to FL for serive . Mater of fact I now have all my regs serviced in FL. They work right and I have never had to take one of them back to the shop. When I serived them hear it cost twice as much , and 1/2 the time I would have to take them back for adjustments. Boyhow the carvern/inbtro anbd aprentice/full cave made such a big difference. So much that I compare it as a befor and after thing. The list comes in handy keeping up with the changes and keeping tabs on the gear and such. Especialy the KISS methode. When my wife took her scuba cousrce , It took a while before I found and instructer to give the courcse as She needed moor time and attention , not the 99.00 course stuff. Who wnats to be tought by some one still working on there DM card ? Not even there Assistan instructer card. ..
