Subject: taper thread valves

Mr. Bowers:

Throw the cylinders out! They're more trouble than they're worth. There's
plenty of steel 72s around with 3/4 NGS (straight thread with o-ring boss)
ports. I could probably sell you one or two of mine.

You can try ebay for complete tank/valves with straight thread valves.

Sherwood, The Liberty Group, Genesis Scuba, or the former Sherwood
distributers used to sell a standard valve that was turned down to 1/2 NPT
and chrome plated, but it was outrageously expensive (as I recall dealer
price was in the $50 range), and the availability was "catch as catch can".

If you insist on turning down a 3/4 NGS valve, any professional machinist
will have the specs and probably a ring gauge for 1/2 NPTF (aka "dryseal")
pipe thread. A hobby machinist can look up the spec in either the Machinery
Handbook or a hydraulic fittings catalog. A professional machinist will get
about 1/2 to 3/4 hour setup time plus 1/2 hour for each valve, at a cost of
at least $50 per hour.

You will have a couple of problems with this job:

1. Most professional machinists won't do work like this (liability
concerns).
2. Most dive shops won't fill a tank that has a modified valve or a modified
port (if they know). There have been a couple of accidents related to things
like this (European valve in a US tank or vice versa), and dive shop folks
won't bother to draw the distinction between a hacked job and a professional
job.
3. Dealing with that 1/2 NPT port on the tank makes it a real pain when it's
time to inspect, or clean/tumble the tank.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Subject: taper thread valves

Does anyone have a source for yoke taper thread valves to fit a couple LP
72's? I know they're as rare as hen's teeth, but maybe someone has a stash
out there somewhere. If not, can anyone tell me how to spec the threads to
machinist to have some straight thread valves turned down?

Thanks,
