FYI, My girlfriend & I just got back from the Caymans last night. We spent a week diving with "DIR" rigs aboard the Cayman Aggressor IV. Half of the passengers and a couple of the crew on the boat made remarks about how much they liked our gear configs, with some even asking us how they cold modify their current setups to be more like ours. As expected, our gear functioned flawlessly -- those 27 lb. Halcyon wings are perfect for single tanks & lugging a vidcam. I guess there are idiots everywhere, so someone may get blasted for DIR setups, but I've never seen it. I used DIR in La Paz, BTW, and never got hassled for it. One dive store manager in particular told me that i could use it, but he wouldnt let anyone else, period. go figure as to why. my guess; a hold over from more than 10 years ago, when several people saw the long hose and decided to use them for lobster hunting. They would take off their tanks and used the long hose like a hooka to explore small cracks. a little surge, and they were separated from their air; not too brite, but it happened fairly frequently (for a while) back then. This fellows solution; you can dive what you want, just not a long hose. He has reiterated this position to me within the last year. And he is a self described "tek " diver; a nice guy and otherwise good diver, but he learned from an instructor who has left at least one buddy/body on the doria; in my opinion not the best example of instructor. And he hasnt dove his mess enough yet to figure just how problematic his (fairly recently learned) techniques are. mark -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
