Sounds like you had a good time, you old geezer! Is brooks still a pony-boy?
Fighting sharks for your catch! Careful, you might give some stokes heart
attacks!

Happy Birthday!

Subject: Dive trip report Morehead City, NC

Hi all
Went to Morehead City, NC to dive for my birthday this past weekend. Several
friends joined me to dive the wrecks Schurz depth 110ft and Papoose 130ft.
We dived on the dive boat "Diver Down" with Capt. Bobby Cox
www.diverdownscubadiving. <http://www.diverdownscubadiving.com/> com
<http://www.diverdownscubadiving.com/> ...
On Saturday seas were a bit rough 4-5 ft, but that did not stop us from our
goal of diving the Schurz a German built gunboat that sunk in 1918 after a
collision with the SS Florida that sits 25 plus miles out.
When I scootered down to the wreck it was plain to see that the wreck was
covered with bait fish, during periods of the dive I could not see the wreck
or determine where I was even as the vis was 60 ft and water temp 68 top-
bottom. I found it best to move around the wreck by scootering above the
bait fish and then going down into them where I wanted to look, I have the
wreck well pictured in my mind. For those who like to spearfish the grouper
are big this time of year and still very dumb. But this won't last long and
I'd go again this month if that were my goal. I did a 60 min BT on 30%
nitrox mix w/ 02 for deco and used 1300psi out of my 95 doubles. The dive
was very relaxing for me, I had my gearline hung over the side and deployed
my jonline for decoing. One poor guy forgot his jonline and had no gearline
and I watched him get the shit kicked out of him on the anchor line by the
boat going up and down. His arms are now 6 inches longer;-)).
On Sunday we dived the Papoose 130ft a Tanker that was sunk by the U-124 in
1942. Once again vis was 60ft and the temp now 70 top-bottom with seas only
3 ft. Lots of large sandtiger sharks were on the wreck and I had plan to
spearfish for grouper while using my scooter to hunt. LOTS of very large
grouper were on the wreck, I had speared my first one in 5 mins into the
dive, a 6- 8 lb one. I had to fight off a 6 ft shark to keep him and it was
plain that the sharks were hungry.
The wreck is turtled, but can be penetrated very easily (I do not recommend
this without training). I have never hunted grouper before and was very
surprised at how strong they are and go crazy trying to throw the
spearshaft.
I was caught off guard by one as I shot him (very large one) and he went
into the wreck pulling me against the hole he went in and taking my gun with
him. I used my light to see he had threw the shaft and the gun lay in the
wreck. I also could see a larger place to enter and went there to go in and
get my gun. I did this without any problems and took time to explore the
inside, I saw nothing worth staying in there for and went back to hunting.
The score for the dive by me was grouper 6 / JT one. I did 50 mins BT , max
depth 124ft , I used more gas on that dive as hunting causes you to breath
more. (1600psi) You can see photos of the trip on my site in the photo
gallery page http://www.capt-jt.com/

Hope you enjoy
Capt. JT
