Kent,

That little chinese made dildo looking thing is the best strobe I have been able
to get so far. the Joltron doesnt have the output youd like to have and the
tektites will leak before 50 dives or so. There is a place in Brooklyn that
sells one that has a plastic yellow body, that is the same size, shape, design,
NSN, SOLAS# etc as the orange one, but when you put the lithium battery in it,
you get a camera flash level of brightness for the first ten hours or so. The
orange body one doesnt seem to produce the same light. I have a friend-who is an
excellent diver, despite being a FAS prototype- and an electrician who put me on
to them. He claims he disassembled one of each and that the yellow one has a
properly volted flash assy. while the orange is overvolted, and that the
NSN/solas # is useless as a guide. He has used them for penetrations in the 225
to 250 range, and yes they are in place of a penetration line, and no after 15
years of doing it his way he wont change, although he did switch to bt and
tables after a series of skin bends, but I dont want to make it sound like the
guy deserves a one way ticket to Blackville Stupid. < paging Greg Zambeck,
call
your office>

I believe I still have the box from when I bought a few last year, i can look if
you want me to, to see if there are any other identifyting # on it. The yellow
one comes in a square box, unlike the orange one which Ive only seen in a
blister pack < flat plastic coated cardboard> at west marine, etc.

For anchorline I cut off th velcro and rig it with a d ring & ss hose clamp
around the body. I use a large ss gate snap and hook it to the chain. When its
not clipped to the anchor chain I carry it clipped off inside my bug bag, which
has the requisite ss bolt snap and no metal to metal connections. For obvious
reasons I dont recommend metal to metal or suicide snaps on the body. You will
probably want to wrap it with cave line a dozen times or so and tie a bolt snap,
and carry it in the leg pocket. Or i have seen it carried on a deco bottle using
the supplied velcro strap.

Another plus to the orange is that the cost is low so you can replace w/o too
much pain I actually pay as much for the lithium c cell as for the strobe. The
yellow one I have only been able to get from the dive shop in bklyn and he wont
tell me where the come from and yes you guessed it they are expensive in the
shop. But then, how much is it worth that day you are floating toward the Kodiak
Islands, or in my case, Ireland???

regards,

Al Marvelli
