Kevin, I don't think having 1st stage/LP hose connection hand-tight is a good idea since oring can be extruded very easily (as you've empirically discovered :-)). However, 2nd stage can be hand-tight and swapped when necessary, because here oring is sealed by the gas pressure regardless of how tight the hose nut is.
