Don,

That was my point - these "shoes" comments implied
that people should be allowed to do whatever they wish in dangerous
environments with the wrong equipment and then not expect to take any flak -
that is garbage.

Whilst sometimes I think George and his crew go far too far flaming people -
the underlying message is good.  Nothing is more wasteful than deaths in
diving (or climbing) due to inadequate training and inappropriate equipment
