Subject: Re: DIR DRY
Argon is a good idea in low water temperatures or long exposure times,
but is not strictly necessary when not breathing a helium based gas
mixture. You will notice a slight improvement over air or nitrox with
the argon, but nowhere near as significant a difference as if you used
helium in the drysuit. Obviously, if you don't take the argon bottle,
you lessen your profile somewhat and reduce the chance of getting keyed
in a restriction. When using your back gas as suit inflation, the
inflator should run from the left post, so as to split up the regulator
dependency of your buoyancy devices (wing inflator is on right post).
As for positioning, if you are using a large bottle (Luxfer 14 cu. ft.
2015 psi), you should attach it to the left side of your back tanks
with some sort of retaining device that permits you to remove the tank
yourself underwater, should you find yourself stuck. It should be
mounted inverted, so that you have easy access to the valve with your
left hand and can control the gas delivery manually should your suit
inflator stick, and it should be mounted as far down the back tanks as
possible to reduce drag by ensuring that the blunt end of the bottle is
in the slipstream created by the back tanks and manifold. For shorter
dives, a 6 cu. ft. argon bottle is more than adequate. Such a tank is
mounted in a similar fashion, but because of its size, may be
positioned on the waist belt on the left hip, instead of the side of
the tanks. This places it in a protected position out of the flow, in
the same manner as the light canister on the right side.

Hope this helps.
