Human Powered Submarines from around the country are heading to San Diego to challenge the Guinness Book of Records. Brought together by an interest in fun and fair collegiate competition against the medium and the clock, teams from as far away as Columbus, Ohio and Seattle, WA have chosen to make the trek to Southern California next March 22-31, 1994 to the mammoth indoor freshwater basin of Offshore Model Basin in Escondido to participate in the West Coast Submarine Invitational. A total of 20-25 submarines are expected. The Invitational is directed by two former submarine team leaders, Kevin Hardy ('91 Scripps Institution's SubDUDE) and Jim Richardson ('91 and '93 Sub-Human Group). The Invitational is organized through the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Ocean Technology Forum. The West Coast Submarine Invitational has been sanctioned by the Guinness Publishing, Middlesex, England. Corporate sponsors include Offshore Model Basin (Escondido), Deep Sea Power and Light (San Diego), Robot Research (San Diego), HiTech Equipment Corporation (San Diego), the San Diego Section-Marine Technology Society, Emerson-Cuming/Grace Syntactics (Canton, MA), and Travelodge. Other major sponsors are coming aboard. "Southern California is the center of the sport diving industry," says Kevin Hardy. "Most of the major equipment manufacturers, certification organizations and the primary trade association are headquartered here. The first dive club, the Bottom Scratchers, began and still exists in San Diego. It makes sense to have an event of this caliber here." "We developed and successfully demonstrated the methodology off La Jolla for Guinness in 1992," continued Hardy. "Part of the agreement with Guinness was that others would have the opportunity to challenge the records. We're making good on that promise." Jim Richardson, co-event organizer, believes "the Invitational will provide a friendly and supportive environment to evaluate engineering designs, to verify performance and to inspire innovation and interest in the area of underwater technology. We're encouraging each team to try different configurations of their boats. Their fastest time will challenge the records." Organizers note that the West Coast Submarine Invitational is an event, not a race, and bears little similarity to, nor is it affiliated with, the Perry Foundation's International Submarine Races held off the eastern coast of Florida. One major difference among several: the teams can stay here for as little as one day instead of two weeks in Florida. Plus the weather's always nice in San Diego. "We're using David Bushnell's Turtle, from the American Revolution, in our graphics," says Hardy. "People have been building human-powered subs for a long time." The Invitational is set up with three divisions: high school, collegiate and professional. Each division has four categories: 1-man propeller, 1-man non-propeller, 2-man propeller and 2-man non-propeller. That creates a total of twelve awards in addition to the Guinness records.
