Wakulla Springs - March 3/4
WKPP's Wakulla Springs operations kicked into high gear this past weekend a=
s support, setup, and rebreather teams began preparing the cave for explora=
tion in the coming months. The basin cleared 2-3 weeks ago and A-tunnel vi=
sibility is 50ft and improving. Dry conditions are expected to continue as=
WKPP divers prepare to pick up where the left off 2 years ago in M & O-tun=
nels. =
Setup began early on Sat. with Cathie Neel and Mark McCarty placing the maj=
ority of decompression gas for 7 gas divers and 4 rebreather divers (50+ ta=
nks!). Meanwhile support divers Nanci LeVake and Skip MacElhannon partiall=
y replaced, repaired, and repositioned the guideline from 120ft to the 190f=
t drop and removed the old lines in the entrance restriction. Both teams d=
id a tremendous job and finished up well in advance of the gas teams.
OC Team 1 (Landon, Baxter, and Lais) moved safety bottles out to 2200 and i=
nspected existing bottles @ 2200 & 1400. =
Bottom time: 30 min
Max Depth: 280ft
Gas: 10/50
OC Team 2 (Jackson, McKinlay, Hunsucker, and Deschamps) moved all but 3 saf=
eties from 2200 to 3500 and dropped 2 - 42 amp/hr drive scooters for the lo=
ng range RB team. In addition, the 3500 safeties were checked and several =
were removed due to low pressure.
Bottom time: 45-50 min
Max Depth: 280ft
Gas: 10/50
RB Team 1 (Werner and Cole) moved a number of the 3500 bottles out to 4800/=
6500 while RB Team 2 (Irvine and Jablonski) picked up the rest and removed =
low pressure and deteriorating equipment from the 4800 and 6500 depots.
Bottom time: 120 min
Max Depth: 280ft
Gas: 10/60
Scooters: 2 each + 42 amp/hr primaries
Lighting: HID
Worth mentioning was the excellent teamwork and focus displayed by our newe=
st gas divers: Billy Baxter, Bill Lais, Scott Hunsucker, and Herve Descham=
ps. These guys were asked to step up and they got the job done. 4 additio=
nal weapons in a growing arsenal.
Divers accomplished all objectives without incident and packed it up by 9 p=
m. =
I believe it took the last group 3 months to reach 6500?
Great job guys, especially the support team who moved 20+ scooters, 75+ tan=
ks, 4 rebreathers, and 7+ sets of doubles in and out of the water throughou=
t the day. I would especially like to thank the new members: Larry Ficker=
(Fri & Sat), Todd Leonard, Dan Nieves, Steve Kulish, Pina Porceddu, Mark G=
arland, and Jerry Moore. An additional thanks to David Sweetin, Mark Garla=
nd, and Jerry Moore for staying late and assisting the RB divers as they pa=
cked up. =
Throughout the day Steve Dittner handled surface manager duties superbly an=
d it was good to see Dawn back and helping run the show up top. As for the=
bone smuggling thing Steve, I know it wasn't you but we're still looking i=
nto it. I would also like to thank Steve Auer, Ron Demourin, and Barry Mil=
ler for the video and photography work. Nice to finally have some blue wat=
er to shoot in and we look forward to the gallery photos.
The light is green and the cave is clearing so let's recharge, double check=
the gear, and get ready for some serious diving in the coming months. You=
guys are solid.
We're in the process of putting a dive schedule together and currently look=
ing at a 2-week rotation so as not to burn everyone out too fast. Pencil i=
n March 18-19, April 1-2, and April 15-16 (Earth Day @ Wakulla).
