I started diving when I was 16 back in 1970 in = Southern California. My state-of-the-art dive gear consisted of a tank = mounted on a plastic backpack. An SPG, hanging off my first stage and a = single second stage. Nobody had invented the "Octopus". Although the = backpack had a quick-release snap on the left shoulder, the webbing was = simple and streamlined. I didn't wear a B.C. because they weren't = invented yet. I weighted myself just right (initially with a Korean War = era ammo pouch filled with rocks). I wore black, heavy rubber jet-fins. I dove for several years, then spent a couple years over-seas. When I = returned, I moved inland and quit diving. I started up again just a = couple years ago and bought all new gear... wrap-around jacket style = B.C., console, Octopus, and all the danglies. I scratched my head, but = just shrugged off the feeling that I was a hydrodynamic nightmare! I = dove this way for about a year, and then started to try and figure out = how to minimize my profile in the water. The ridiculous configuration = of stuffing or storing the Octopus was also a concern. It was never = secure, and hard to find with all this clutter on my chest.=20 I then came across an article on the Internet explaining the Horgarthian = configuration. I knew that this was the answer! It was back to basics, = simple, well thought-out and made perfect sense. I had no problem = converting and did it as quickly as possible with wonderful results in = my diving speed and gas consumption. I suppose it makes more sense to someone who dove earlier and enjoyed = the simplicity and sleekness that was what diving was all about years = ago. People so often view change as a threat, rather than an = opportunity! We just don't take the time to study it and understand it. = I think there is an unhealthy dosage of ego involved now-days as well. = People are so arrogant and feel so threatened when they see something = different or new, they dismiss it offhand.
