Every year, I volunteer my vacation time to help underwater archaeologists on
shipwreck projects. This summer, Duncan Mathewson, will again conduct his
Marine Archaeology Field School July 5-15 in the Florida Keys. The cost is
$499 for 4 days, $799 for 7 days and $999 for 10 days. This includes
instruction in laying baselines and measuring offsets, drawing artifacts in
situ on U/W slates, historical perspectives of shipwreck research, library
research, underwater mapping, photomosaic techniques, excavation techniques,
artifact preservation including reverse electrolysis and many more aspects.
I have attended this field school for three years and have enjoyed every
minute. It has given me an opportunity to develop new techniques for doing
photography and videography on shipwrecks, to actually use an airlift and
'mailbox' for digging 25' diameter/8' deep holes in the sand looking for
artifacts. Last summer, we excavated the El Capitana, the flagship of the 1733
fleet. In all, I have worked on 13 shipwrecks through this field school,
produced a video and plan to continue this summer, maybe, in the Dry
Tortugas.
Participation in this field school has opened up several opportunities
for me working with maritime archaeologists, including in the Mediterranean. I
don't get any money for doing this. I thought that you should know of some
opportunities to do this.
Also, the University of Hawaii is offering an u/w archaeology field
school for 6 weeks this summer (June 26-August 2, I believe). They will offer
2 weeks of classroom instruction, 2 weeks diving on 2 wrecks off the big
island, and 2 weeks of lab work making site maps, etc. And there are more
opportunities. Contact me if you are interested. Stormin Norman Thomas
