Carmichael had to come up with something to accomdate open water diving that still was an add-on or external system and not permanent. When using wetsuit starting out, the issue of being able to drop the weight (belt) in one shot is risky if it is under the harnness, and we want to teach harness only, and it is uncomfortable if over the harness. Then when you go to cold water and drysuit where you need more weight, then the bigger belts are a sticking point with students and divers due to the discomfort factor and they must be under the harness in this case, while the slide-out packs accomodate higher weighting without that problem. Personally, I would say screw it, show them doubles to start, but we all know this is not real life. I personally hate the big weighbelt with a single tank and a drusuit since it pulls on my hips , but cold water diving with a drysuit means that you need a lot of weight to allow yourself to add sufficient gas to the suit to stay warm. Others solve this by adding more insulation, which in turn means more weight. I wear doubles and a canister light, but that is not what the new diver has at his disposal. The new system, while having many parts in order to still be able to preserve the key gear in the same spots, is a removable slide-off system that does not compromise the integrity of the DIR harness , and still means the the diver starts with the same rig for open water that will work for any dive later on by sliding of the weghting system. Bottom line - it is better than anything anyone else has ever come up with, and is there to satisfy demand wihtout screwing over the new diver and forcing him to buy gear twice.
