I just got tested today. Negative for PFO, and all other shunts/defects =
in the heart and lungs.

The technician wondered why I was getting the test done. I explained to =
her. She new nothing about diving, but provided me with little more =
information on shunts and whatnot.

The tests were performed with a 2D-ECG. A normal ECG won't allow for a =
proper examination. She said that she cannot see a PFO persay, but it =
would manifest itself in the form of a PDA (whatever that is) with =
"shunting blood". She didn't believe that PFO was evident in as much as =
1/3 to 1/4 of the population. She said that from here experience, it =
usually showed up in infants born prematurely. Even in those cases, the =
PFO sometimes grows over.

She also said that there were other shunts in the lungs and heart =
besides PFO that could allow venous blood to get to the arterial side. =
She was able to check for these as well with the same machine.

The procedure is completely unobtrusive - kinda like an ultasound. It =
is actually kind of pleasant when you have a hot blond administering the =
test ;-)

Anyway, in Ontario some doctors will let it slip by so OHIP pays for it. =
Others won't, and in that case it costs ~$150. =20
