Here's the deal:

I originally posed the question to the list and received a wide variety
of replies, ranging from there is no need for a DIR faq to offers of
server space, etc.

There was no consensus on the format that this FAQ should take.

Many questions were sent, some of which I saved, due to their wide
applicability. Some I answered privately, and may have included
pointers to archived messages which no longer exist.

Jarrod Jablonski of GUE contacted me to say that the answers to these
questions were already on the GUE site for the most part. I raised the
issue of avoiding any commercial affiliation, and of including long
winded explanations for certain questions which may not be appropriate
for the GUE site. He suggested that we work together to develop this
document, and specifically that I compile the questions that need
addressing, and then discuss them with him.

Realizing that the techdiver archives contained certain posts which
answered these questions quite succinctly, I tracked down the responses
that applied and kept a record of the URLs (intending to use links).
The contents of the archives originating prior to December of 1999 have
apparently since been destroyed, so this seems to be a wasted effort.

I have a small collection of question explanations that I have sent in
the past, as well as a few archived messages from others (primarily
WKPP et. al.) which address these issues.

I have not been in contact with JJ since our last exchange.

I have become very busy lately, and so do not have a great deal of time
to spend on this, although I am committed to getting it out there if
the demand still exists.

Some people e-mailed me with questions, along with old posts of mine
that contained the answers. I don't generally save my outgoing mail,
so this is a big help. Similarly, if you saved a post from George or
anyone else because it clearly answered a question, send it along with
your question.

Once again, what format for this document would you most like to see?
Q/A format, detailed technical article, other...?

Whenever possible, I try to personally respond to your questions, as
well as saving them for the future FAQ. If I missed anyone, it was not
intentional.

I got a lot of suggestions from seasoned DIR divers as to what
questions should be included. Unfortunately, the most important
questions are easily overlooked when you already know the answers, so
once again I would like to appeal to the newbies on the list to send
any questions you may have. No flames, and I will ensure that the
answers are included in the FAQ, as well as responding privately or
pointing you to someone else who can.

Anyone who can donate server space under the domain www.DIRdiving.com,
please contact me.

-Sean
