Jeff, he was in open water ten feet from the bank and we could see down on him from above. In the last 500 feet of cave and in the cavern there was zero vis and we were all on the line single file in touch contact until we got into the open water portion - the last 20 feet. He could not see us, we could see him because of his light. Exley died doing somebody else's dive plan not his, and he was breathing air to 400 feet - real stupid. He was not allowed by the others to bring us to support him which would have changed the entire equation dramaticly, sicne we could have set his bottles in for him and and he could have used the correct gasses and correct decent rate for the dive, still as stupid as it gets, but better than what he did - there was no talking him out of it, I tried for weeks. All he wanted was to have those records, and I told him that with or without records, he was still Sheck Exley, and Batman is still batman - a stroke - no matter what.
