A while ago I posted a question about deploying a spool on the list. Since then I've got about a dozen people email me asking what kind of responses I got, so I figured this is something that should be posted. Here we go: Most tech agencies teach deployment of a reel/liftbag while sitting on the bottom. What's wrong with this? Reels are notorious for jamming. This happened to a buddy of mine with his BSAC while we were doing a drift dive. Solution: use a spool like the ones EE is selling. Now, the spools don't hold as much line as the reels do, so you'll have to make a free ascent to ~100 ft, then deploy it. I don't like this idea, since the reel/liftbag were to eliminate a free ascent, but it's not a fair comment since I haven't tried the spool yet - but I definitely will. to deploy: make your free ascent to 100 ft, attach lift bag to line, fill bag with exhaust bubbles, when the bag takes off, hold the spool between your thumb and index finger. If you think that the spool is going to get away on you, you can get your hand on the line and let go of the spool altogether and watch it spin. The other end of the line is secured to the spool.
