Subject: Safety Spool question

I've been using reel without many problems. One dive, I remember my
buddy's reel jamming, and getting pulled up 15' or so until he sorted out
the problem while on a drift dive.

Anyway, the concept of the spool seems great, I just have some deployment
questions.

Is the other end of the line tied to the spool?
Do you just hold the spool in your hands and let the lift bag do the work?

I checked out the spool on the EE page. They don't seem to hold as much
line as I had imagined. The biggest holds 150'. I think I understand the
concept. If your depth is greater than 150', you deploy it, and let go of
it, because it should just be hanging at 150'.

what if the vis is so bad that you wouldn't be able to see the spool
dangling in 150' of water as can be the case with sites I dive?

thanks
Steve
