Cam,

Why don't you just slip them both over your right wrist?  While making the surf
entry you can hold onto your mask and reg with the right hand and tuck the fins
under your forearm against your body.  You'll get them on a lot faster too.

This way you know whether or not you have both of them.  I've seen people use
the method you presently use and they did not know they lost a fin until they
tried to unclip them.
