Manos If this was a troll, well done, you've got me. If not, then remove the cotton. >Simply because it is impossible to compare oranges with >onions. I think this is the nub if the issue, since I do not agree with your point. We are talking about diving and fundamental principles for safety. I see no reason why the "technical" cannot be applied to recreational diving. The reverse as it stands now cannot be done. If training agencies were to teach DIR procedures, equipment and configuration, then it would save a lot of people the cost of replacing worthless equipment not to say the cost of lost lives. Clearly, I am talking DIR procedures applied in the context of recreational dives and within the experience of the diver. Let me give you a simple example of this. A few years ago, a diver died whilst diving the Moldavia on air to 50m. He was diving on a single and a back mounted pony. He jumped in breathing his pony regulator in error. After he had depleted the pony supply, he tried to locate is octo. This was stuffed in his BC pocket and he could not get it in his moment of stress. Memory fails me as to the actions of his buddy. Obviously, a DIR diver would have approached this very same dive, considered recreational in the UK, quite differently. In fact, the simple addition of a necklace to hold the backup would have saved his life. What I describe here is very common to see in the UK, especially on shallower dives. One of the most stupid things I hear from time-to-time is recreational divers saying, "I don't need to do XYZ because I don't do the diving you do". They are accepting a lesser level of equipment or configuration just because their dives are shallow and perceived to be less dangerous. When the brown stuff hits the fan you want to give yourself the best chance of getting out of it, no matter what depth you find yourself in. Festive felicitations. Im a Naui Instructor for the last 2 years and if i look back at my long term training i wouldn't find anything in recreational diving that blends with tech Diving. And you know why ? Simply because it is impossible to compare oranges with onions. I am a multiple personality person like any recreational instructor should be when teaching a course or when diving at extremes with tech equipment. We are subscribed to this list to share ideas and not to argue with each other. It is impossible again to understand the logic of applying the same rules on 2 completely different subjects. If you take the risk of tech dive then you accept rules and procedures that look crazy and suitable to others. Manos Manoli Greek Island of Cyprus.
