I spoke to Jim Abernethy again about these dives last night. The boat we would use is the Tranquility, and when we go we will book it for just our group---the boat is a six pack, but a six pack that could run 12 or 18 in the Keys :) , i.e., it has lots of room and is good for recreational or tek use. The reefs I would like to get you guys to experience are Juno ( well known spectacular ledge at 80 feet, but even more fantastic lobster diving on the "rolls" far up on the crown, extending for many miles) , the Jupiter reefs two ranges, one ledge at 110 on top and 135 at deepest point, with an awesome cave called the "Hole in the Wall", and the other reef line is at 175 to 210--very cool deep ledge only a handful of us have been on). There are many other hot spots in Palm Beach, but these will be the ones you will brag about. For the purposes of going over the whole DIR philosophy, gear, configuration, etc., I don't want this to become a major deep diving program. The 80 to 135 stuff will be more fun than most of the best tek dives I hear people talk about, and for the purpose of trying out new gear and techniques, far more sensible. I will try to set up some good gear demo opportunities for those coming for the DIR experience, Halcyon set ups, perhaps even Extreme Exposure lights if I can talk JJ into it. You will get to see how effortlessly we handle 3 to 6 mph currents with drift techniques and torpedo floats, and you will effortlessly cover more miles per dive than most would ever imagine possible. Include in this at least one of our high current Palm Beach wreck dives, so you can see how well DIR techniques work here. As to booking the boat, we need to plan ahead at least a few weeks. $60 per person includes tanks. If we are diving hyperoxic Trimix I will probably need to get the tanks ahead of time from Brownies, so the boat will be a bit less, but the gas will run the overall cost a little above this. Visit http://www.scuba-adventures.com/fleet.html We can get any of you good deals for rooms right on the water in Singer Island, which is within an 1/8 mile of Abernethy's boat. Best bet will probably be the Rutledge Inn. To see what the hotel will be like, go to http://www.sfdj.com/rutledge/Rutledge.html If a group of you can stay in a large room together without killing each other, the room cost and subsequent overall vacation cost should be something you could afford to do easily or frequently. George and I will try to dive every weekend, so we should be pretty available for this. Bill Mee should make many of these trips, and both Jarrod Jablonski and Robert Carmichael have agreed to do several of these as well ( if we get our whole crew, we would use one of Abernethy's larger boats). If I left out some planning, let me know what you need. Depending on when you come in, you can probably plan this trip with no rental car, or a whole group could share one. You won't need one to get back and forth to the boat, and the Ocean Mall and restaurants are all an easy walk. Airport rides should be easy to handle by taxi ( $25 flat rate) . Please give me dates soon that sound good for you. Abernethy even said he'll shoot video of the dives!
