Pete, this thread had to do with tying braided line, not twist laid (I though we were just talking about tying a line to itself, anyway). Splicing the braid is a pain in the ass at the best of times, and damned near impossible on line that small, plus you need the tools. As for tying loops, the bowline has some serious disadvantages. It is more appropriate for constant rather than cyclic loads, for the same reason it is easy to untie.
