Richard,

try tying them with a double fisherman's knot. I have all my equipment tied
this way and I assure you that this knot is almost "undonable"... it is also
used in some life dependable mountain rescue equipment, as proussiks...

if you wish a "how-to", I can dig in my files, scan it and submit the image
