Use a Suunto SK5 or SK6 compass. They have a small slot in the side for putting the standard strap through but you can remove the bottom section via 4 screws and place the bungee straps in the slot before you screw the base back on. The bungee will then be held captive by the slot and the pressure but will have some relief.
